About the Dutch Bakery Museum
The Dutch Bakery Museum is located on the banks of IJssel, in the picturesque fortified town of Hattem. It was founded by Gerrit Willem Barendsen in 1977. The most interesting fact about this bakery museum is that it is the largest in the Netherlands. It consists of two buildings – Pand and Backhuys – which are connected by an underground tunnel. The Backhuys, which was previously a café, was purchased in 1985 and became part of the museum in 1987.
The museum is a great place for anyone interested in learning the rich history of baking and pastry. It’s full of delicacies and activities for the young and old. The place is ideal for a group outing, birthday party, school trip and a family day.
Here are some activities to experience at the museum:
Taste the delicacies of the bakery – the museum has a “Gelagkamer” where you can have a cup of coffee or tea with delicacies from the bakery. Some of the bakery’s specialties include the apple pie, butter cake, and the giant cream butter crack.
Bake – in addition to watching baking demonstrations, expect to bake your own bread and pastry. This is a very exciting experience especially for families with children.
Watch entertaining performances – the bakery museum has a theatre that hosts family performances regularly, especially during school holidays. The performances are informative, hilarious and they guarantee an unforgettable experience.
Bakery Shop – the museum shop is packed with nice items such as postcards and home baking products. You can purchase any item as souvenirs for your home or gifts for your loved ones.
It is important to note that the bakery museum is closed on Sundays, Whit Monday, Easter Monday, Christmas Day, King’s Day and New Year’s Day. Opening hours are from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm, however, this may vary during school holidays.
